Barbara Cheeseboro is a founding board member of the Kuumba Storytellers
of Georgia. Barbara has performed for a local production of the
"Slab Town Convention", a play that preserves the history
of Christian African-American slaves in the South. She has told
stories and performed for schools, churches, youth organizations,
libraries, summer camps, Zoo Atlanta, festivals, colleges, The Atlanta
History Center and businesses across the United States.
Barbara is a member of the Kuumba Storytellers of Georgia, NABS
(National Association of Black Storytellers), NSA (National Storytelling
Association), and S.O.S. (Southern Order of Storytellers). She is
a member of First Baptist Missionary Church, The One More Effort
Federated Club, National Council of Negro Women, The Green Thumb
Garden Club, and The Willing Workers Club. Barbara is also member
of the National Educational Association.
Barbara Cheeseboro was born January 18th at Craig Air Force Base,
Alabama to Maberia and Rosa N. Cheeseboro. She attended the public
schools of Florida, Ohio, The Philippines, and South Carolina. She
is a graduate of Hillcrest High School, Dalzell, South Carolina.
Barbara attended the Art Institute of Atlanta, where she earned
a degree in Interior Design. She later attended Atlanta Metro College
where she graduated with a degree in Elementary Education. Barbara
has attended Georgia State University and Kennesaw State University
where she has completed additional training in the field of education.
She is the recipient of A Who's Who Among Students in American Junior
Colleges, the College Board Achievement Talent Roster 1978, and
numerous other academic awards.
Barbara is currently working for Sumter County School District Two
Sumter, South Carolina. She is the lab manager at Pocalla Springs
Elementary School, and she is also the resident storyteller. She
works with the S.A.V.E. Program at Pocalla where she mentors two
students daily. One a troubled young girl and the other a foreign
student who needs help with reading and English. Barbara is the

She has worked for Sumter County School District Two since October
2003.
Before working in Sumter County School District Two, Barbara worked
for Marietta City Schools from 1985 to 2003. She worked at Pine
Forest Elementary School as a technology specialist. She has also
worked at West Side Elementary School and Park Street Elementary
School as a media clerk and technical specialist.
• Barbara has received the distinguished award of Outstanding
Support Personnel for the school year of 1990-91 and again for 1996-97.
• Barbara has been named Employee of the Month for the months
of April in 1989; in February 1994 she was awarded this award for
storytelling, and again for the month of November in 1996.
• In 2001 Barbara received the Superintendents Award the highest
award in the Marietta City School System
• She also received the 2001 Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
Trail Blazer Award for outstanding work in her community.
• Barbara has served on the management team for Cobb County
Special Olympics and is a current board member for Reading Consultants.
